Arcomusical is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to spread the joy of the Afro-Brazilian musical bow known as the berimbau through the development of an innovative, excellent musical repertoire. Although the berimbau is well-known in Brazil, most people in the United States are not familiar with its elegant simplicity. Arcomusical is changing that landscape. Their concert will feature music composed both by, and specifically for, their ensemble.

Prokofiev’s simple, charming, magical tale of Peter and the Wolf has introduced countless young ears to the instruments of the orchestra and to wonders of classical music. Revisit that childlike wonder that still lives inside us all with a program of fairy tales and legends, featuring Peter and other beloved characters from our favorite bedtime stories. Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite is a pristine gem, comprising five vignettes inspired by stories including Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast and more. Stravinsky’s delightful, refreshing Pulcinella Suite, about the antics of a tragicomic clown-like character and all his friends, along with Sibelius’ melancholy Valse triste. This program is designed for adults, and kids alike.

At the turn of the 20th century, an innocent Japanese girl falls victim to a U.S. naval officer and an ancient code of honor that foreshadows her fate. Puccini’s dramatic, romantic music brilliantly underscores the tragedy which never fails to bring tears to the eyes. This visually provocative presentation, a revival of the 2010 production, features Metropolitan Opera soprano Danielle Pastin as the betrayed Butterfly, and tenor Richard Troxell as Lt. B. F. Pinkerton, star of Frdric Mitterand’s award-winning film version of the opera.

World-renowned pianist Ching-Wen Hsiao's UT debut recital will include Prokofiev's Sonata No. 7 and compositions by Gordon Chin. Dr. Hsiao is Assistant Professor of Piano and Co-Coordinator of the Piano Area at West Virginia University. A founding member of the Lyon Piano Trio, Dr. Hsiao is the Regional Director of the Elite International Music Competition and Director of the West Virginia International Piano Competition and Festival.

The October Masterworks program is about folk music, memory and heritage, opening with Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7, composed to reflect the struggles of the Czech nation in the late 19th century. To follow, contemporary composer Jessie Montgomery’s “Records from a Vanishing City,” a piece inspired by the composer’s experiences growing up in New York City’s Lower East Side. Internationally renowned pianist Natasha Paremski performs Edvard Grieg’s beloved Piano Concerto in A, which contains a wealth of Norwegian folk music influences.

6:00 p.m. Alive After Five with Crawlspace (LINK)
Crawlspace is the most recent project of veteran Blues rocker and harmonica wizard, Michael “Crawdaddy” Crawley, a mainstay of the Knoxville music scene for more than two decades, as the leader of Crawdaddy and The Macdaddies and also playing with International Blues Challenge semi-finalists, Jenna & Her Cool Friends. After Jenna Jefferson retired from the music scene to spend more time with her family, Crawley assembled a new group with Cool Friends members and some others, and Crawlspace was born. With Kevin Redding on drums, Ben Maney and Stevie Jones on keyboards, Bob Goodson on guitar, Aram Takvoryan on bass, and Michael Crawley on harmonica and vocals, there is enough talent and synergy that one might say the sky is the limit for Crawlspace! Food available from Rocky’s Jamaica Sunrise.
TICKETS: $10 General Admission, $5 with Membership or student ID, Free for ages 17 and under. All tickets are sold at the door beginning at 4:45 p.m.
