Professor Chih-Long Hu's award-winning students present 24 etudes and preludes by Frederic Chopin. While Chopin's etudes elevated the form purely technical exercises to artistic masterpieces, his preludes exemplified his genius and creative pinnacle. These miniatures, comprising a cycle of all 24 major and minors keys, are rich in musical styles and expressions.

New York-based Australian classical guitarist Rupert Boyd has been described by The Washington Post as “truly evocative,” by Gramophone as a “fine guitarist,” and by Classical Guitar Magazine as “a player who deserves to be heard.” Laura Metcalf, noted for her “gorgeous cello legatos” (Washington Post) and her “sensitive, melodic touch” (BlogCritics Magazine), is a member of the highly acclaimed string quintet Sybarite5, and cello-percussion quartet Break of Reality. Their 2017 album, Boyd Meets Girl, debuted at #3 on the Billboard Traditional Classical charts and received the following review in Gramophone: “They play like one, with a harmony of purpose as sure as their intonation.”

This spring they will appear as ensemble-in-residence at the inaugural Music in Bloom Festival in Bloomington, Indiana.

The University of Kentucky Faculty Jazztet includes Professor Miles Osland (woodwinds), Bradley Kerns (trombone), Raleigh Dailey (piano), Danny Cecil (bass), and Paul Deatherage (drums). The jazztet's music is an update of the jazz tradition with influences ranging from jazz fusion to free improvisation. The group plays original music, as well as reinventions of classic jazz material.

The AA5 winter series concludes with the premier performance of the 4th annual week-end long Women in Jazz Jam Festival, coordinated by Kelle Jolly. The Women in Jazz Jam Festival Band is a collective lead by women musicians who perform with the love of jazz in their hearts and the joy of life on their faces. Featured in the group are some of Knoxville’s local favorites, as well as, rising stars. Their performance will include music written by and made famous by women performers, as well as some original music.
